Top Five Tips For Freshers

Leaving home and starting university comes with a lot of changes, from meeting new people and making friends to navigating the chaos of Fresher’s week, you will experience a lot of emotions and hurdles. We’ve put together the top 5 tips for getting through Fresher’s Week:

Make the Effort with Your Flatmates…

Leaving home for the first time can be emotional, and it can be easy to give in to shyness when you arrive at your student flat. You might find yourself making excuses to hide in your room – we’ve all been there – but you’ll regret it if don’t make the effort with your flatmates. Having friends in your flat will make uni life much more enjoyable, so prop open your door when you’re unpacking to encourage them to peek in and say ‘hello’. Better yet, ask if anyone wants a cup of tea – this is a sure way to encourage conversation.

Go to the Fresher’s Fair…

During the first week of the term, your university will host a fresher’s fair – make sure you go! Not only is the fair a great way to learn more about what your uni has to offer, it gives you a chance to learn about groups and societies that you might be interests in joining. It’s also a great place to go to with your new flatmates, giving you a chance to get to know them better.

Build up your Stationary Collection with Freebies!…

Another great thing about Fresher’s Week is the sheer abundance of freebies on offer! It is easy to stock up on pens and other stationary – enough to get you through your first year, even. So, although getting free pens and canvas tote bags may not seem too exciting, it saves you money on buying pens!

Make a Budgeting Plan…

After the first drop of your student loan and night clubs serving crazy-cheap drinks especially for Freshers, it can be easy to feel like you don’t need to concern yourself with budgeting just yet. However, it might surprise you just how quick you can accidentally get through that cash when you think you’re getting a good deal! Create a loose budgeting plan to ensure you have enough to live on when Fresher’s Week is over.

Don’t Put Any Pressure on Yourself…

During Fresher’s Week you might feel like you have to do a lot of things that you don’t usually do. While we encourage you to push yourself out of your comfort zone, don’t so anything that you feel too uncomfortable with! For example, if you’re not a big drinker, don’t feel pressured to down as many jaeger-bombs as possible every night! And, most importantly, don’t worry if you’re not having as much fun as other people might seem to be. Fresher’s Week isn’t always for everyone – and it certainly doesn’t represent the whole student experience.
