One of the common worries students have when approaching their first year at university is whether or not they will fit in and make friends. It’s important to remember that you are not the only one with these fears as most other students will too! Meeting new people is actually easier than you think. Here are a few options that can help you ease the anxiety of meeting new people.

Join A Society

This gives you the chance to meet people who have similar interests to you but also a chance for you to learn about something different. Many universities have a societies day during freshers week that allows students to meet the organisers and sign up to different societies.

Join A Sports Club

Whether you like football, cricket or tennis, the chances are there will be a sports club available at the university for you to participate in. You are not limited to sports clubs at uni, as you could also try joining a club outside of the university and meet more local people.

Apps

There are apps available for you to meet people such as Meetup. You can find activities around your local area and meet others who may also be new to their surroundings and looking to meet people.

Add People You Meet On Social Media

You will be meeting lots of people in your first week at uni and it might be difficult to remember names. If you add the people you meet on social media then you will be able to keep in touch with them and arrange meeting up with them again in future.

Make Friends Before You Go

There are a number of ways you can do this. One of which is finding who is on your course and getting in touch with them. You could also join forums such as The Student Room to find others in a similar situation and communicate with them. They might be studying a different subject to you but you may find that you have interests in common. You could possibly arrange meeting up during the first week so that you both know at least one person before you actually start.
